Temple Judea Religious School

Temple Judea's Religious School serves over 200 children from kindergarten through grade 10.  With our professional teaching staff and a spiral curriculum, children are introduced to the Aleph Bet in our Gan (kindergarten) class and learn about holidays, customs, traditions, life cycle, Israel, ethics, Bible, etc. through Confirmation.  Class size is small (under 18, with most classes around 12) with emphasis on hands-on instruction.

In grades 4-6, when children have their two-day instructional program, students are placed in Hebrew classes based upon their achievement level and a Hebrew specialist works with children in all grades.  Our worship specialist leads worship and learning services for grades Gan through 6.  Our family educator plans twice-a-year programs for each grade and parents are encouraged to attend school with their children on these days.  Our Special Needs coordinator works with teachers, parents, student aides and students to enhance the learning of our students with special challenges.

In the year 2003-4 we began a retreat program for grades 8-10, and in 2004-5 it expanded to include several synagogues in our Philadelphia area.  The program has been extremely well received by the students in these grades.

We have two sessions on Sunday morning for each grade, and parents and children choose the session that best meets their needs.  Spaces in these classes are filled on a first come, first served basis.  Special programs, like Tu B'Shevat Seders, Purim carnival and other special assemblies are held school-wide at appropriate times during the year.

Beginning in kindergarten, students also have the opportunity to participate in Shabbat services, and in grades Gan through 6 the classes participate in at least one service each year.  We hold Shabbat dinners prior to some classes services during the year.

Students in all grades are involved in Tzedakah projects and some of the classes have direct involvement in community service at the discretion of the teacher and parents.  An active Education Committee works on many aspects of the school's program and is always looking to expand its membership and the programming done in the school. Our Religious School Principal, Steve Weintraub, has been with us for the past 16 years, and looks forward to speaking with potential members to address their questions and individual needs. Linda Kallin, our Assistant Principal, also encourages input, especially related to her work on school curriculum.
