Rabbi Pokras' Website Picks
For Supporting Israel and Staying Informed

POLITICAL & NEWSWATCH SITES
TO SHOP, NOT TO DROP*
www.haaretz.com
Ha'Aretz is the Israel New York Times, and has a fabulous English language website.  I set my browser to use it as my start-up page so that every time I go on-lne I get the latest news and analysis from Israel.
www.shopinisrael.com
Taking the slogan "All Jews are responsible for each other" seriously, the site includes a section on supporting the IDF and links to professional services, like Web designers and illustrators, as well as food and gift merchants.

www.honestreporting.com
www.camera.org
These organizations monitor how the American and European press cover Israel and other Jewish issues of import.   Additionally, Honest Reporting offers outstanding weekly e-mail updates and provides opportunities (and guidance on how) to challenge the media decision makers who cross the line with unfair biases.

Kitsch, Dead Sea cosmetics, children's books and souvenirs, with a section on Ethiopian art showing embroidered talit and tefilin bags and jewelry.

www.israelexport.org
Developed by the economic department at the Israel embassy in Washington, it includes links to companies that market their products abroad.
www.memri.org
The Middle East Media Research Institute monitors Arab Language media in the Middle East in an attempt to "bridge the language gap between the Middle East and the West."   Memri offers regular e-mail updates (I recommend the digest, not the full version).   A word of caution:   this site if not for the faint at heart.
www.israelnowandforever.org
Sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and the JCRC of Greater Philadelphia (Jewish Community Relations Council) and other Philadelphia area Jewish organizations, this is a truly phenomenal site offering extensive links for news, advocacy, education, shopping and tzedakah.   If you are only going to choose one site, this might be the one.

Webmaster's Picks**
for Jewish content and education

www.jewishencyclopedia.com
Contains the complete unedited text of the 12 volume Jewish Encyclopedia originally published between 1901-1906 with over 15,000 articlees and illustrations. Since the original work was completed almost 100 years ago, it does not cover a significant portion of modern Jewish History. However, it does contain an incredible amount of information that is remarkably relevant today.
www.aish.com
Aish HaTorah is an international organization dedicated to answering the question "Why be Jewish?"   Their goal is to "stem assimilation by reaching out and building bridges between Jews of all persuasions."   This outstanding website addresses topics from spirituality and the Jewish world to dating and parenting with articles, programs and stories for adults and children of all ages.
www.jewfaq.org
A wealth of information about Judaism covering Jewish beliefs, people, places, things, language, scripture, holidays, practices and customs for Jews and non-Jews alike who want to know more.
